Andrea started her journey at COHME in 2012, and it was her first home care job. She loves going out, dressing up, and has a personality that makes people laugh. She is honest and self-expressive. She loves being straightforward, and getting to the point is her work style. Friends often describe her as kind, funny, and loving.
Let’s get to know a little more about Andrea:
What made you want to enter this field?
I was a customer service representative before. I worked at McDonald’s and Loehmann’s before entering COHME. I wanted a change in my life, and I happened to see COHME’s hiring information on a flyer, so I applied and was lucky to get the position.
What is it like working as a home health aide?
It was definitely a different work life for me. I noticed that my clients had different personalities, and I formed unique relationships with each of them. They were elderly and often in pain. Some were warm and kind, and I introduced myself and shared who I was. Others didn’t want to open their doors at first. I waited a little, tried again, and called the office for support.
What do you like about working with older adults?
I enjoy working with older adults. Many of them are funny and adventurous, and most have traveled to different places around the world. They come from diverse careers such as teachers, doctors, writers, and artists, and have experienced life across the globe.
What challenges have you faced in your work, and how did you overcome them?
It can be challenging when it comes to patients. They have different disabilities and are at different stages of Alzheimer’s. They might tell the aides to leave or even hit us without warning. You need to know how to approach them. You have to come from a place of kindness and warmth. You want them to see you as someone who genuinely wants to help. You need to give them time and be patient.
How have your career goals changed over time?
No, my career goals have not changed over time. It’s been a long journey in home care. COHME is a great place to work. They have good meetings and an open-door policy. If something comes up, you can talk about it. They are also very supportive when it comes to working with patients.
Are you a different person because of this work?
No, I think I am still the same Andrea. But I understand pain better now. Pain is not always physical. It can be loneliness, emotional, or mental. I’ve learned to recognize different stages of stress and how to help manage it.
How do you manage your work-life balance?
I dedicated myself to work. Work is my life. It keeps me busy, and I enjoy it. I look forward to going to work. I love being able to use the money I earn to buy things I like. Work is fun for me.
What has been your greatest gain from this work?
Diversity. I’ve learned to meet many people from different backgrounds. Hearing their stories and where they came from has been meaningful. Some stories made me sad, but I would never trade this work for anything. I will never give up on taking care of people.
