Asha is originally from Africa and moved to the United States about 20 years ago. She now lives in New York City and has been working with COHME for 5 years. Asha doesn’t have much free time, but when she does, she spends it taking care of her home, doing laundry, cleaning, shopping, and dressing up. She is also a proud mother of two daughters. Though she doesn’t have many friends, she believes in supporting each other. When her friends face challenges, they are there for one another, helping and lifting each other up in this country.

Let’s get to know a little more about Asha:

What inspired you to enter this field?

What inspired me to enter this field is my experience with my mother, who is getting older. I know I will age too, and I wanted to understand what it’s like for people as they get older. I wanted to spend time with them, learn from them, and help them. It’s really fulfilling to talk to my clients. Some are happy, others are sad, and everyone has their own story. My clients are wise and have a lifetime of knowledge. They just need a little help to continue living comfortably.

What’s it like working as a home health aide?

When I arrive at my clients’ homes, I approach my work as if it’s a new day, a new opportunity. Every time I’m there, it’s like starting a fresh job, taking care of them, cooking for them, helping them with things like going to the bathroom. I’m there for them, always present, showing respect, and offering my support in every way I can.

What do you enjoy about working with older adults?

I enjoy my job because I approach every day as if it’s a new opportunity. It keeps me motivated and brings a sense of freshness. I make it a priority to treat my clients well and bring them happiness. I appreciate working with adults because they are wise, and I enjoy interacting with people who have so much experience and knowledge.

What are some challenges you've faced?

When my clients are unhappy, sometimes it’s for no clear reason. I give them a little space and time, staying patient and not talking too much. I let them process things at their own pace, offering support when they’re ready.

How have your career goals evolved?

This has always been my career goal, and I don’t want to change my job. I’m used to it now, and over time, I’ve gained more experience and make fewer mistakes. I really enjoy working with older people. They are so smart and observant. Even when they’re quiet, they’re watching and understanding you. They’ve lived longer, so they’re more experienced and mature, and they know exactly what they want.

Has this work changed you?

Of course, yes. I’ve learned to respect people more and to be full of love.

How do you balance work and life?

I don’t have much free time. I do the laundry, clean the house, cook all my meals, shop for myself, and dress up. Basically, I handle everything on my own. It’s cheaper, and I like to live efficiently.
