Carmen is an ambitious professional with about twenty years of experience at COHME. She has worked with adults, children, and now the elderly, connecting deeply with the communities she serves. Born in Puerto Rico, Carmen moved to New York City at seven and now lives independently in the Bronx.

Let’s get to know a little more about Carmen:

What inspired you to enter this field?

The elderly population was one I hadn’t worked with before, and I wanted to try something new. I saw it as a chance to grow and find more opportunities. In the beginning, I was used to working night shifts and weekends, and I used to have a lot of cases. I was always willing to help along the way and support where I was needed.

What’s it like working as a home health aide?

In the mornings, I always prepared myself to be mentally professional. No matter how I felt, I made sure not to show tiredness. I kept myself composed and respectful, ready to engage in conversation and show the clients that I was there for them. Some of them were unable to fully express their needs, so I had to be observant, cautious, and smart in learning what they needed and how to help. I assisted with bathing, changing, making their beds, and keeping their apartments clean and presentable. For clients with special needs, I communicated with the nurses on their behalf to make sure they received proper care.

What do you enjoy about working with older adults?

I’ve gained a lot of experience from working with the elderly. Many of them needed care, and some were living with dementia, which taught me the importance of respect, patience, and self-care. I truly enjoy working with this population because I know that one day I will be in their place. I want to learn from their life experiences and do my part to make them feel comfortable and supported.

What are some challenges you've faced?

One of the main challenges I’ve faced is working with clients who have Alzheimer’s or dementia. It requires a lot of patience, calm communication, and emotional control. Sometimes they can be confused or upset, so I have to lead conversations gently, help them think in a more positive way, and make sure they feel that I am there to help them, not against them. Another challenge is staying alert and cautious, especially when taking them outside, to ensure their safety.

How have your career goals evolved?

My career goals have evolved over time. I started by working with adults, then moved on to working with children, and now I’m focused on caring for the elderly. In the future, I’m not completely sure where my path will lead, as I’m still exploring different opportunities and learning from different life experiences.

Has this work changed you?

This work has certainly changed me. I have become more empathetic and compassionate, always making sure that my focus is on addressing my clients’ needs, not my own. It has taught me how to handle difficult situations and engage in challenging conversations, including how to manage escalated moments. These are skills I can apply everywhere. When people disagree with me, I’ve learned how to find common ground and reach a middle point that works for everyone.

How do you balance work and life?

I make an effort to stay connected with my community to broaden my perspective and relax my mind. When I take a break from work, I try not to get too immersed in job-related thoughts and instead find time to rest and find peace. I enjoy reading, playing tennis and volleyball, joining community events, and exploring the neighborhood around me.
