Fatoumata has been working with COHME for over two years. She was born in Washington D.C. and moved to West Africa when she was five, where she grew up. She returned to the U.S. in 2000. Fatoumata enjoys reading books in both Arabic and English. She’s not interested in parties or movies; instead, she prefers to read, go to work, and then come back home.

Let’s get to know a little more about Fatoumata:

What inspired you to enter this field?

When I was in my 20s and 30s back home, I took care of my grandmother, parents, and aunt, most of whom were elderly. I found great joy in caring for them and realized that this is what I wanted to do with my life.

What’s it like working as a home health aide?

I always do my best in my job. When I enter a client's home, I wash my hands and assess what they need, determining what should be prioritized. If something challenging comes up, I contact my agency for clarification. I also make sure to communicate with my clients, checking in on how they’re doing and asking what they would like me to do for them.

What do you enjoy about working with older adults?

I enjoy working with older adults because it's something I've wanted to do for a long time. I like playing with them, understanding their moods, and talking to them when they’re feeling sad. I also enjoy watching TV together or accompanying them outside.

What are some challenges you've faced?

Every client is different. Some may be aggressive, depressed, or simply not in the mood to talk. I’ve learned to be patient, show more empathy, and try to understand things from their perspective, recognizing their mood. I've also developed strategic communication skills. Additionally, I reach out to my agency whenever I need support.

How have your career goals evolved?

My career goals haven’t changed. I’ve always wanted to do this job for the rest of my life.

Has this work changed you?

This work has changed me in many ways. I've learned to observe people's emotions and become more willing to help others. I feel a deep sense of fulfillment every time I return home from work. I've also learned to communicate better with my husband and listen to him more attentively. Additionally, I've gained a deeper understanding of the world from the perspective of older adults, learning to respect them, as well as all human beings, and to cherish the life of everyone.

How do you balance work and life?

When I'm off work, I take a shower, read a book, and clean the house. It’s just me and my husband, so I spend time talking to him and taking care of both the house and him. I also make sure to get some rest. Occasionally, I travel to visit my family members.

What’s been your biggest reward?

My biggest reward is giving. It brings a sense of purpose and satisfaction that nothing else can match.
