Sheryl has been with COHME for over 3 years. She is originally from Jamaica and currently lives in Brooklyn. She loves traveling the world and am always interested in exploring new places. She also enjoys reading and caring for the elderly.
Let’s get to know a little more about Sheryl:
What inspired you to enter this field?
I grew up with my grandparents, who cared for me unconditionally. My grandmother was always willing to do something good for the community. She worked on a farm, where she would serve coffee to anyone who stopped by and offer food, whether for lunch or dinner. If it rained, she would provide shelter for our neighbors. She was also very kind to animals. I admired everything about her. Even though we were poor, she made us feel rich in spirit. I wanted to do the same for others, caring for them the way she cared for everyone.
What’s it like working as a home health aide?
It feels incredibly rewarding. I've fulfilled my dream of caring for others and treating them the way my grandmother treated the neighbors. She received so much admiration, love, and respect, and the home we grew up in was always filled with love. Now, I feel the same way.
What do you enjoy about working with older adults?
I enjoy working with them, especially those who are easy-going. I love sitting and talking with them, particularly those who enjoy discussing history.
What are some challenges you've faced?
I've faced quite a few challenges. Some patients can be stubborn and ungrateful. One client could manage to wipe his lower body but insisted that we do it for him. Another client, a woman, asked us to cook for her son, who is at least 30 years old. However, no matter how my clients treat me, I never retaliate. I don't fight back, speak disrespectfully, or complain.
How have your career goals evolved?
My career goals have not changed much. My daughter often laughs and says that the older I get, the more emotionally invested I become in my patients. I see this as a long-term commitment.
Has this work changed you?
This work has not changed me either. I've always been a loving person as I grew up. I've always wanted to help the world, and that's something I've been doing consistently. I am deeply compassionate about people and take care of those around me.
How do you balance work and life?
First of all, you have to be comfortable with yourself; you need to be patient and tolerant. I've learned to pray and focus on finding solutions, staying calm and laughing off the incidents that come my way. I also make time for myself. When I'm not working, I enjoy traveling or spending time with my grandkids.
