Teresa has been working for COHME since 2010, accumulating over 15 years of experience with the company. She values COHME deeply because the clients have always treated her like family. Originally from Honduras, Central America, Teresa moved to the United States when she was 23 years old. She is a proud mother of two sons and a daughter, all in their 40s, and currently resides in Brooklyn.

Let’s get to know a little more about Teresa:

What inspired you to enter this field?

I used to take care of my father until he passed away, and through that experience, I realized how much I love taking care of people. That’s what inspired me to enter the field of home healthcare. I enjoy being a team player and working alongside others to make a difference.

What’s it like working as a home health aide?

I make sure to be on time and present myself to the clients with a friendly introduction. I kindly ask how they’re feeling that day, try to be agreeable, and ask what they would like for breakfast. Then, I follow up by asking if there’s anything else I can do for them, like help with a shower. Some clients have dementia or other mental conditions, and I always treat them with the utmost respect.

What do you enjoy about working with older adults?

I enjoy working with my clients because every one of them is different. I’ve learned a lot from them. I try to understand them and make them feel comfortable. Many clients have treated me like family. Some have even invited me to their homes and shared meals with me.

What are some challenges you've faced?

Sometimes I took care of a client who had dementia. She didn’t always understand why I was there and would sometimes confront me. I would introduce myself kindly and explain that I was there to help with her medication and take care of her. I showed a lot of patience and warmth throughout.

Do you see this as your long-term career?

I see this as my long-term career. I truly want to stay in this field and don’t have the time or desire to switch to something new. I am fully dedicated to my work.

Has this work changed you?

This work has changed me. I’m more patient now, and I’ve learned to be punctual and professional. I’ve also become better at handling different situations. Most importantly, I’ve learned how to communicate effectively with my clients to ensure they receive the best care.

How do you balance work and life?

I used to work seven days a week, which was challenging. I didn’t have much time for myself, but I learned to manage it. After a long day, I would take a warm shower and do some reading. I wanted to be fully focused when I was with my clients and make sure to get enough rest at home. Despite the busy schedule, I felt satisfied with how I balanced everything.

What’s been your biggest reward?

My biggest reward is being able to work with COHME. The team has always supported me and been there when I needed them. COHME has made many things possible and addressed my needs, and I am very happy working here. I truly feel like part of the family at COHME.
